Signs of compressor problems: unit not reaching temperature despite running constantly, compressor making loud knocking or grinding sounds, compressor starting and stopping rapidly (short cycling), compressor not starting at all, or high pressure shutdowns. Small single-hood systems run $300-$500; larger multi-hood systems or restaurants with heavy cooking can run $700-$1,500. Access issues (long duct runs, high roofs) add cost.
